Discover Antalya Turkish Restaurant

If you’re craving authentic Turkish flavors in Melbourne’s north, Antalya Turkish Restaurant at 233 Sydney Rd, Coburg VIC 3058, Australia, is the kind of place you’ll want to bookmark. I’ve eaten my way through plenty of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean spots over the years, and this one genuinely stands out-not just for its food, but for how confidently it delivers a true Anatolian dining experience.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the aroma. Grilled meats, warm bread, and a hint of smoky charcoal drift through the air. It instantly reminds me of the small family-run eateries I visited in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district a few years ago. Here, the process feels just as traditional. The chefs work over a charcoal grill, carefully skewering lamb shish and chicken kebabs, rotating them slowly to lock in juices while creating that slightly crisp exterior. It’s not rushed. Good Turkish food never is.

The menu covers all the staples you’d expect from a proper Turkish restaurant-doner kebabs, pide, gozleme, mixed grills, and meze platters. On my last visit, I ordered the mixed grill plate, which is usually the best way to judge quality. The lamb cutlets were tender and well-seasoned, the kofte had a balanced mix of herbs and spices, and the chicken shish was marinated deeply enough that every bite carried flavor, not just the surface. According to culinary research published by organizations like the World Health Organization, traditional Mediterranean-style diets-rich in lean meats, fresh vegetables, olive oil, and yogurt-are associated with balanced nutrition and heart health. You can see those principles reflected in the generous salads, creamy cacik, and vibrant dips served here.

Their freshly baked bread deserves a mention on its own. It arrives warm, slightly puffed, and perfect for scooping up hummus or baba ghanoush. I once watched the staff prepare the dough behind the counter, rolling and stretching it before baking it quickly at high heat. That hands-on method makes a difference; it’s soft inside with just enough chew.

What makes dining here even more satisfying is consistency. I’ve spoken with other locals in Coburg who regularly leave glowing reviews, especially about portion sizes and value for money. In fact, a friend of mine who works in hospitality brought his extended family here for a birthday dinner. With more than ten people at the table, service can easily fall apart-but not here. The staff handled it smoothly, pacing dishes so the table never felt overcrowded, while still ensuring no one waited too long.

The location on Sydney Road makes it easy to access, whether you’re driving or catching public transport. Coburg itself has become known for its multicultural food scene, and this restaurant contributes strongly to that reputation. The interior isn’t overly flashy, but that’s part of the charm. It feels approachable, relaxed, and family-friendly. You’ll see couples sharing a pide, tradies grabbing a hearty lunch, and large groups enjoying a long dinner with Turkish tea to finish.

Speaking of drinks, the traditional ayran pairs beautifully with grilled dishes. Its cool, salty tang cuts through the richness of lamb and beef. If you prefer something warm, the Turkish tea served in tulip-shaped glasses adds a comforting end to the meal.

From an expertise standpoint, what sets this place apart is technique. Turkish cuisine relies heavily on balance-spice without overpowering heat, char without dryness, richness balanced by acidity. The kitchen clearly understands this. Even the rice pilaf, often overlooked, is fluffy and subtly buttery, not greasy.

Of course, no restaurant is perfect. During peak weekend hours, you might experience a short wait, especially if you haven’t booked ahead. That said, the turnover is efficient, and takeaway is always an option if you’re in a hurry.

Overall, this Coburg gem delivers authentic flavors, generous servings, and reliable service. Whether you’re exploring Turkish cuisine for the first time or you’ve grown up with these dishes, the menu offers something satisfying and true to tradition.

  • I had a fantastic dinner at Antalya in Coburg (233 Sydney Rd) such a warm, authentic Turkish spot. We shared the mixed grill platter for two, which featured a hearty mix of meats cooked to perfection. Alongside it, we had a large potato salad that was surprisingly flavourful and fresh. Despite it being a busy Friday night, we managed to get seated immediately with no wait always a bonus. Because we ordered a main, they served us complimentary Turkish bread. The staff were very polite and attentive, which really added to the whole experience. If you’re after a laidback but lively Turkish restaurant with great food and friendly service, Antalya in Coburg is a top choice. I’ll definitely be back!

  • Wow… this place is so so good. By far the best Turkish restaurant I have been to in Melbourne. The portion sizes are soo good and reasonable. The food tastes so hot delicious and full of flavour. We tried many of the items on menue and they were all so delicious. The eggplant stuffing is a must if you’re eggplant fan. You won’t regret it. The soup was the best ever I’m so glad this is so close to home and will be back most definitely The eskender was a tad dry and not enough saucy but everything else was super delicious and just perfect 12/10

  • Long established Turkish restaurant in Coburg (Sydney Rd). Very nice decor for dine-in but I went the takeaway option so this review is premised on that. Ordered the kebabs which were very good. As generous and good as any on the Sydney Rd strip which has many kebab options. The Turkish bread and (home made?) dips were outstanding. Also ordered a doner meal (shish kebab) of 2 shish, one dip & small salad/rice with bread. Tasty but have had larger doner/shish meals in the area. Would I be back? In a pinch, yes.

  • Best Turkish food on Sydney road if you want a nice sit down experience. Cosy and the food is yum. The Latina waitresses are very friendly and thoughtful. Elevated the mood.

  • We have been coming here since they opened; 20+ years ago and we have never been disappointed. It's hard to go past the 'banquet' meals, either the regular or the special, and we inevitably choose the special because it includes seafood (make sure you are really hungry for one of these because there is a lot of food). The prices are good and everything is delicious.

  • Great atmosphere, warm and inviting inside. The food is first class. Warm, fresh baked bread, delicious dips and meats, and the best lahmacun in Melbourne. This wonderful restaurant is definitely worth a special trip. Highly recommended.
